How Tall Should a Lifeguard Chair Be?

There is no single ideal height for every pool. Commercial lifeguard chairs range from approximately 30-inch low-profile models to elevated stands measuring eight feet. Five- and six-foot chairs are common where guards need improved sightlines across larger competition, municipal, and community pools. Lower-profile chairs can be a better fit for shallow-water areas, smaller pools, or stations where rapid entry and exit are priorities.
Height and portability are separate decisions. Permanent or anchored stands work well for established guard stations and typically require less deck space. Portable rolling stands allow facilities to reposition guards as programming, attendance, and sightline needs change—and portable models are available in both low-profile and elevated configurations.
When selecting a chair, consider: pool size, shape and sightlines; water depth and assigned surveillance zone; available deck space; permanent versus portable placement; guard access and speed of entry; umbrella, swivel-seat and footrest options; storage for rescue equipment; and stainless-steel grade or low-maintenance HDPE construction.
