Why Stainless Steel Rusts Around Pools—and How to Prevent It

Why Is Stainless Steel Preferred for Commercial Pool Equipment?
Stainless steel is widely used for commercial pool equipment because it is strong, durable, attractive, and naturally resistant to corrosion. It can withstand demanding daily use while maintaining a clean, professional appearance, making it an excellent material for starting platforms, rails, ladders, lifeguard chairs, pool lifts, anchors, and other heavily used deck equipment.
Unlike painted or plated materials, stainless steel's primary corrosion resistance is built into the metal itself. Chromium in the alloy reacts with oxygen to form an extremely thin protective layer on the surface. This is known as the passive layer or passive film. When the stainless is clean and exposed to oxygen, this layer can often renew itself after minor damage.
However, stainless steel means stain-less—not stain-free. Even high-quality stainless steel requires regular care in a chlorinated aquatic environment.
How Does Spectrum Protect Its Stainless-Steel Equipment?
Spectrum Aquatics applies a three-step corrosion-protection process to its stainless-steel pool equipment before it leaves the factory.
1. Electropolishing
Electropolishing removes microscopic surface imperfections, impurities, and embedded contaminants left behind during fabrication and mechanical polishing. This creates a smoother, brighter surface with fewer irregularities where moisture, chlorides, and other contaminants can collect. The smoother surface is also easier to clean and maintain.
Spectrum explains that electropolishing combined with passivation produces a smooth, chromium-rich surface with improved corrosion resistance.
2. Passivation
After electropolishing, the stainless steel is passivated. This chemical treatment removes free iron and other surface contaminants while strengthening the naturally protective chromium-rich passive layer.
The passive layer helps stainless steel resist rust and corrosion. If that layer becomes contaminated or damaged in service, appropriate cleaning and repassivation may help restore its protective properties.
3. Spectra-Shield
Spectrum then applies Spectra-Shield, its proprietary protective treatment for stainless steel used in aquatic environments. Spectra-Shield embeds into the microscopic grain and intergranular structure of the surface, helping prevent moisture and harsh atmospheric chemicals from entering small surface irregularities.
This three-step process gives Spectrum stainless steel additional protection before installation. However, it does not make the equipment maintenance-free. Weekly rinsing, cleaning, drying, and inspection remain important—particularly in indoor natatoriums and other demanding pool environments.

How Does Stainless Steel's Protective Layer Fail?
Stainless steel's passive layer is extremely thin. It can be compromised when chlorides, pool chemicals, iron particles, mineral deposits, or other contaminants remain on the surface.
Moisture trapped around welds, fasteners, joints, anchors, and other crevices can make the problem worse. These areas may not receive enough oxygen for the passive layer to regenerate properly.
The first warning signs may include:
- Orange or brown surface staining
- "Tea staining" or discoloration
- Rust around welds and fasteners
- Rough or crusty deposits
- Small pits in the metal
- Corrosion inside joints and crevices
If surface contamination is removed promptly, the stainless can often be cleaned and repassivated. If corrosion penetrates beneath the surface, however, permanent pitting can develop. Cleaning may improve the appearance of pitted stainless, but it cannot replace metal that has already been lost.
Have You Experienced "Chlorine Cough" in a Natatorium?
Have you ever developed a cough, experienced burning eyes, or noticed heavy, irritating air while sitting in the bleachers of an indoor pool? That strong "chlorine" smell and uncomfortable air can be signs of chloramine buildup—not necessarily too much free chlorine in the water.
Chloramines form when chlorine reacts with nitrogen-containing substances introduced by swimmers, including perspiration, urine, body oils, and other organic matter. They can accumulate in the water and then off-gas into the surrounding air—particularly when swimmers splash or when water features, fountains, sprays, and other activities agitate the water's surface.
Without sufficient fresh-air movement and effective exhaust, chloramines can accumulate in the warm, humid air of a natatorium. That contaminated moisture circulates throughout the facility and can settle or condense on starting platforms, rails and ladders, lifeguard chairs, pool lifts, diving equipment, fasteners and anchors, and structural metal components.
When contaminated moisture evaporates, chlorides and other corrosive residues can remain on the equipment. Over time, these deposits can interfere with the stainless steel's passive layer and contribute to staining, rust, crevice corrosion, and pitting.
Equipment does not have to be submerged—or even regularly splashed—to experience chloramine-related corrosion. High bather loads, active water features, elevated combined chlorine, inadequate ventilation, and persistent humidity can expose stainless-steel equipment throughout the entire natatorium.

How Often Should Stainless-Steel Pool Equipment Be Cleaned?
We recommend establishing a weekly cleaning routine for stainless-steel pool equipment. Facilities with heavy bather loads, challenging water chemistry, active water features, or indoor-air-quality concerns may need to clean more frequently.
Recommended weekly maintenance:
- Rinse with fresh, non-chlorinated water. Spray stainless-steel deck equipment with fresh hose water to remove pool water, chemical residue, and airborne contaminants.
- Apply an approved stainless-steel cleaner. Use a cleaner intended for stainless steel in an aquatic environment and follow the cleaner and equipment manufacturers' instructions.
- Wipe with a clean, soft towel. Clean the entire surface, paying particular attention to undersides, welds, joints, fasteners, anchor locations, and other areas where moisture and contaminants can collect.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove the cleaner and loosened contaminants with fresh, non-chlorinated water.
- Wipe the stainless completely dry. Do not simply allow the water to evaporate. Evaporation can leave chlorides, minerals, and other corrosive contaminants behind.
- Inspect the equipment. Look for discoloration, surface rust, crusty deposits, crevice corrosion, loose hardware, or pitting. Address developing problems before they become more difficult to correct.
Avoid steel wool, carbon-steel brushes, harsh abrasives, and chlorine- or chloride-containing cleaners unless they are specifically approved by the equipment manufacturer. These materials can scratch the surface, damage the passive layer, or introduce iron contamination that later appears as rust.
What Should You Do When Rust Appears?
Treat rust-colored staining as soon as it becomes visible. Light surface staining is generally much easier to remove than crusty deposits or established pitting.
- Spectra-Clean System 1: Routine cleaning, passivation, and light surface staining.
- Spectra-Clean System 2: Stubborn deposits and extreme cleaning conditions.
- Spectra-Clean System 3: Severe corrosion and restoration.
Select the system appropriate for the condition of the equipment and carefully follow the application instructions and safety documentation. Spectrum describes System 1 as suitable for routine use, with Systems 2 and 3 intended for progressively more demanding conditions.
Cleaning and passivation remove contaminants and help restore the stainless steel's protective passive layer. Existing pits, however, are permanent. Deeply pitted equipment may require more frequent care and should be evaluated if the corrosion could affect its structural integrity or safe operation.

How Does Spectra-Shield Protect Stainless Steel?
Once the stainless steel has been thoroughly cleaned, passivated, rinsed, and dried, Spectra-Shield can be applied for additional protection.

In simpler terms, Spectra-Shield helps seal microscopic pathways where moisture, chlorides, and other contaminants could otherwise collect. It does not repair existing pits or replace proper cleaning, but it provides an additional protective barrier after surface contamination and corrosion have been removed.
For the best results:
- Remove all visible rust and contamination.
- Complete the appropriate cleaning and passivation process.
- Rinse the surface as directed.
- Dry the stainless thoroughly.
- Apply Spectra-Shield according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Continue regular inspections and weekly maintenance.
